Local Walks

Rueval (Ruabhal), Benbecula

The highest point on Benbecula provides a 360 degree view of the unique Hebridean landscape. A steep but straightforward and relatively short walk.

Terrain ~ Stony track, then moorland path over heather, steep in places but easy to follow.

Start ~ Parking at landfill depot on minor road off A865 in centre of Benbecula

Grade ~ Easy

Length ~ 1 – 1.5 hours

Balranald RSPB Reserve

The Balranald Nature Reserve is at the most westerly point of North Uist on the Aird an Runair peninsula. This clear route encircles the peninsula and offers great sea views as well as the chance to spot a wide variety of birds, including the elusive Corncrake. There is a visitor’s centre in the car park and on a clear day the islands of St Kilda are visible from the peninsula. There is a viewpoint on the hill behind the reserve that is well worth a drive up to for views across to St Kilda and down towards Benbecula and South Uist.

Terrain – Track, grassland, with some rougher sections and a short stretch of beach.

Grade – Easy

Length – 1.5 – 2 hours

Lochmaddy and the Hut of Shadows

This circular walk takes in the coastline of Lochmaddy, visiting a hidden camera obscura before heading through crofting land typical of North Uist.

Terrain – Good path returning along the single track road

Grade – Easy

Length – 2 – 2.5 hours

Barpa Langass and the Stone Cirlce

This short circular walk visits two prehistoric sites – the spectacular chambered cairn of Barpa Langass along with the only stone circle on North Uist. The views are excellent but the walk is wet underfoot in places.

Terrain – The route over the hilltop is pathless but marked by wooden posts. It is very boggy underfoot. However the path to the cairn is good.

Grade – Medium

Length – 1 hours

Berneray Island

This varied walk takes in the landscape of Berneray and offers breathtaking views from the highest hill. It also includes a standing stone, the attractive thatched hostel, and another one of the most beautiful beaches in the country.

Terrain – Mix of minor roads, boggy hill ground, machair and sandy beach. A map is required.

Grade – Medium

Length – 4 – 5 hours

Eaval (Eabhal)

Eaval is the highest hill on North Uist. Though only 347m in height its steep sides overlook the island and provide the best views of this beautiful landscape.

Terrain – Faint, boggy path to foot of Eaval, then pathless steep ascent. Rugged going throughout

Grade – Hard (Please make sure you have all the correct equipment and knowledge before attempting this walk)

Length – 5 – 6 hours +

Start ~ Unsigned parking area, off B890, at bend, just east of A865.

Grade ~ Medium

Length ~ 3 – 4 hours
